“Despite a vast number of countries uniting around roadmaps to end fossil fuel dependency and deforestation, and the push by the Brazilian president, the words “fossil fuels” are completely absent from the latest text. This is a betrayal of science and people, especially the most vulnerable, and completely incoherent with the restated goals of limiting warming to 1.5C and the quickly vanishing carbon budget. It is impossible to limit warming to levels that protect people and life without phasing out fossil fuels and ending deforestation. In these last hours, negotiators must work together to bring the roadmaps to a safer and prosper future back to the text. Science is here to help”.

“Apesar de um grande número de países se unirem em torno de roteiros para acabar com a dependência de combustíveis fósseis e com o desmatamento — e do impulso dado pelo presidente do Brasil — as palavras ‘combustíveis fósseis’ estão completamente ausentes do texto mais recente. Isso é uma traição à ciência e às pessoas, especialmente os mais vulneráveis, além de totalmente incoerente com os objetivos reafirmados de limitar o aquecimento a 1,5°C e com o quase esgotamento do orçamento de carbono. É impossível limitar o aquecimento a níveis que protejam as pessoas e a vida sem eliminar gradualmente os combustíveis fósseis e acabar com o desmatamento. Nessas últimas horas, os negociadores devem trabalhar juntos para recolocar no texto os roteiros para um futuro mais seguro e próspero. A ciência está aqui para ajudar.”
